Just got off the phone with a pistol smith who specializes in CZ, DW, and DWX optics cuts. He intimated that there was a power struggle between Colt and legacy DW/CZ personnel affecting product development and support. For example, he noted that the engineer behind the DWX is no longer employed by the company. He mentioned the nobody can predict product availability, and we should assume the worst - parts not in stock may never be in stock.

How can there be a power struggle when CZ bought Colt and not the other way around? That’s like letting your broke parents move in with you and run your house in the manner that suits them. It boggles my mind. Anyway…

I just want to get my TCP locking the slide back no matter which mags I use and would LOVE to get another set or two of the grips that came on the TCP.

This happens all the time in corporate America. My wife worked at BOA and was senior leadership in the supply chain integration of their acquisition of Countrywide Financial in 2008 into what is now BOA Home Loans. Senior leadership from CF to this day are integrated into BOA senior leadership and shape culture of BOA lending operations…despite CF being knee deep in the 2008 housing crisis.

Now, back to regular programming. I’m currently in mission of 2 DW Specialists - a standard 9mm and an Optics Ready 45ACP. For the past 2 months, I’ve spent a significant amount of time trying to develop these 2 pistols to their full capabilities. For the 9mm, I’m plan to optics cut it but am undecided between a direct cut (no plate) vs. some forum of a plate system. When it comes to plates, there are a ton of options available from Green Tick Tactical, CHPWS, and
Stonebridge Gun Works. Of note SGW can mill the DW Optics Ready cut that is compatible with the factory DW plates. While the DW OR interlocking plate system is reportedly very secure, the plates sit quite high, and I’m told the RMSc cut is not compatible with the Sig optics (per the SGW gunsmith). Moreover, there is no plans for an ACRO plate (despite a chart from DW suggesting otherwise) and the supply chain for other plate cuts is questionable.

When it comes to direct milling, there are a ton of reputable options. I’m currently leaning this route but there are some notable downsides. For example, Green Tick can mill an optics cut that tightly fits one optic of a particular footprint with a low deck height, but it may not accommodate other optics within that footprint. So, a pistol milled for a Holosun 507K may not accommodate Romeo X Compact because the lower wall of optic body is encapsulated by the slide (this was reported on another forum) which means that you may bei married to a specific optic - not a footprint. Other shops have limited refinishing options. For example, CHPWS offers nitride and cerakote, but not DLC. I don’t know how I feel about having my pistol subjected to nitriding by anyone other than the manufacturer.

Anyway, I’ll update this thread as I navigate and make final choices.

    Colt leadership strikes again.

The only interesting guns coming out of Colt now are from the Custom Shop. Well, and maybe the revolvers. Now it appears Colt management is having an effect on the DW line as well? It's a shame that two good brands have now suffered under this regime.

The DWX is the type of innovation that should be rewarded and promoted, not stifled.

An OR Specialist is tempting, but I worry about how the company is doing. Is their quality still ok?

I mentioned this around a year ago. My brand new Dan Wesson Guardian had machining swirls on the slide, and they told me that didn’t know when they’d get a new slide. They mailed a check for the cost of the pistol. What?!?!?

If you still have the subscription, check out Hilton Yam's posts and videos about his experience with the OR Specialist.

I’m not the best guy for that since I have very low knowledge transfer from videos, but it seems like he had a fair number of what for him were small issues to work through.

He mostly enjoyed shooting the gun and it passed his extractor function check.

Here are some of the complaints he had:

Thumb safety way too stiff, which he cleaned up.
Factory-supplied BUIS shot way low for him. Different rear sight installed.
Lock-back issues, he suspects a problem with the slide stop/release.
Optic mounting plate screws kept working loose.
A few other minor things that are mostly personal preference.
