Dan Wesson Quietly Expands Optics Ready Specialist Offerings

My LGS has a bunch of new OR Specialists on display in calibers ranging from 9mm to 10mm. Notice the one on the far left is a Commander…

This is a bit of a game changer as DW is the first high-quality manufacturer to make optics ready offerings across the 1911 calibers and Commander slide lengths. Better yet, they fit standard 1911 holsters. So much for Springfield Armory and the Sig 1911X…

Following with interest. I really want to send my Valor slide to them to do their magic on. That way I can have a cover plate for no optic or the factory cut for an optic from the mother ship.

Do the DW's require a plate or are the direct milled?

I think that it is plate only, however I literally tried to call them today to get a quote for milling my 9mm Specialist’s slide and planned to inquire about direct mount options. I got the after hours voicemail - at 2PM…

As it stands now, there are DW optic plates for DPP and Vortex Viper available for purchase. The RMR plate has been out of stock for months and the ACRO plate, while listed on their sizing chart, has never been produced to the best of my knowledge. I think that DW’s assimilation into CZ has hampered their ability to fully support their product lines.

I think that it would be tough to mill some footprints and still have room for a rear sight dovetail that fits a Novak pattern. However, the thought of a direct milled ACRO footprint with a Glock pattern rear dovetail at the very end of the slide (or in front of the optic) makes my dangly parts tingle.

CZ bought Dan Wesson in 2005, so they had a lot of good years. There were some changes made during the pandemic that I don’t think were for the better.

DW wanted my new Guardian back, but it got sent to CZ in Kansas City instead of going to DW, because DW doesn’t do their own warranty work anymore. I’m not crazy about that, but we’ll see what happens.

Interesting. I would be most interested in how this turns out for you. Hopefully it will be to your full satisfaction with no surprises, but would appreciate hearing your take on it when the transaction is completed.

I used the term “assimilation” to reference recent changes in culture that seem to be driving product support at DW. FWIW, there is a thread on another popular forum speculating that CZ-USA is on the verge of bankruptcy. I have no idea if it’s true but having the webstore down for 2 weeks and the customer service line go directly into voicemail at 2PM are not signs of a thriving business.

We just took over assembling the Optic plate kits for the web store. RMR's are still out of stock while we wait for them to come back from finishing and then put them through the assembly process. We should have them back in stock next month. I do apologize for the delays. My hope is that we now have this situation in hand going forward. Thank you for your patience.

Could just be that they don't have the staff to answer the phones.

The TCP is available as an Optics Ready version as well, I picked one up a few weeks ago. When I reached out to DW to find out the front sight and rear sight replacement options, they seemed surprised I even had the gun in my possession.
