Just reformat the drive and turn it in. That's what they will do anyway.
Yes, it IS what they will do.
But... they may want to make a backup of it first, for whatever reason (regulatory, for example).
The more I think about this, the more I'd recommend against deleting anything unless you have permission to do so. I would ask the IT team before deleting data.
