If a user swapped out a drive on me, my assumption would be that they kept the data and are doing something nefarious, and I'd be contacting our legal department.

I tend to default to Hanlon's razor on most user-facing things, but it's definitely something that I'd run up the corporate ladder if I became aware of it happening.

Yes, it IS what they will do.

But... they may want to make a backup of it first, for whatever reason (regulatory, for example).

The more I think about this, the more I'd recommend against deleting anything unless you have permission to do so. I would ask the IT team before deleting data.

So what? We (a very large organization) keep/maintain manufacturer warranties on all of our in-service hardware.
