    This...

Before, both didn’t feel the need to own a gun. Now, they are proud gun owners and keep a handgun in the bedroom.

“I didn’t want a gun. I specifically didn’t want one,” Dittrich said. “I was very much opposed to hav[ing] one, and I guess I got the realization that the police really can’t protect you. They can respond, and they can protect you once they get there. But, you’re on your own.”
    ...and this...

“You’re always looking around,” Dittrich said... “I think I’m back to a new normal,” Duffy said. “Absolutely, because there’s definitely a lot more awareness now than there was in the past.”
...are big lessons learned. Sad that it took such a traumatic event to learn them. I'm trying to work on SA every day... it's so immensely important and you only have to fail once, in the wrong place, to put yourself in a world of hurt.

I'm curious what the hospital's weapons policy is.

Well done on the psychiatrist's part. I think this serves as a great example, due to his profession, and the environment that this occurred.

In some states mental health facilities are automatically no carry zones.

The hospital has a policy barring anyone except on-duty law enforcement officers from carrying weapons anywhere on its campus, a spokeswoman for the Mercy Health System said. http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/s...jures-24701204

I wonder if they'll fire him. We've seen that happen before in this situation.

Not in PA, where this occurred. Nor is the hospital's policy legally binding.

I wonder if he'll regret carrying that gun when he gets fired?

    Agreed.

Also, theres a floor's worth of employees who owe their lives to the doctor violating policy. I doubt hell have trouble looking for work after this. If one of the senior managements' family was in that area during the incident he might not even be fired or punished, which would be the best.

Not to mention the whole "you should have waited for the professionals" argument kinda flies out the window when a bullet grazes your noggin.
