I don't think it's that simple. My Glocks don't rattle and they do well with debris.

It seems like knowing what's rattling, and why, are key things to understand before you can determine if having some parts looser fitting will benefit its performance under dirty conditions.

    Question

If you were looking for a M&P 9mm and you found 2 .

    One that had zero play.
    The other that rattles.

Which one would you really pick?

The one that will consistently group well at 25 yards.

Exactly. I couldn't care less about a rattle, I care about how it performs.

No dispute, the one that shoots. The problem is knowing which M&P will shoot. So is there some mechanical attribute that can be evaluated when new in the box, or do you just make a random choice?

I would probably order it online, so whichever one showed up at my local gun shop.

Mine rattles....now you've got me wondering if I should have compared samples and bought the tightest one.

    I may not sleep tonight.

Mine is a September 2014 manufacture & this was a group that I shot today at 20 yards on a B8 (freestyle) right before leaving the range with standard pressure 124 grain Speer Gold Dot ammunition. Ironically, this is the worst group of the day with the M&P 9, and had shot a 10 shot group with the Gold Dot as well as 124 grain Lawman FMJ where all shots were in the black. The pistol "rattles", but I don't give a rip as long as it performs.
