    AAR: PSC Women's Pistol Clinic Level 1 & 2

    Protective Shooting Concepts
    AAR: Women's Pistol Clinic Level 1 & 2
    November 22nd, 2014
    BVRPC in Beaver Falls, PA

These Clinics were run back-to-back so they could be attended as a full one day class, or independently. There were seven shooters in the first half, and seven in the second half with five carrying over from Level 1 and two rolling in just for Level 2. We had five instructors for seven students.

We spent about 2.5 hours inside covering range safety, gun handling, risk assessment, and some shooting theory. Blue guns and SIRT trainers were employed extensively during this phase to safely demonstrate concepts.

We moved out into the miserable, freezing rain (at least the firing line was covered) and began dry practice. We established good body alignment behind the gun, effective grip, proper aim, and then established trigger control.

We moved into live fire continuing with trigger control exercises - shooters displayed good marksmanship, keeping hits in USPSA "A Zone" targets at 4 - 5 yards. When single shot trigger control was looking good, we began multiple shot strings of fire. This helped shooters understand that they needed to establish a good grip *and* maintain it.

Level 2 began with a little more time on trigger control, then we moved again into multiple round strings of fire, culminating in "failure to stop" drills putting rounds in the chest and (preferably) head "A Zones"... though "B Zone" hits were perfectly acceptable for the head.

Next we got the pistols off the bench and safely in and out of the holsters. Once we were happy that all was safe, we began practicing a practical drawstroke and reholster. We started dry but quickly moved to live fire. Since it was cold, shooters already had concealment, so we jumped right into clearing concealment during the draw. We eventually added an additional layer of a sidestep during the draw. All shooting began from the newly coined "BFO Position" - hands up in front, signaling to the threat to "back off".

The shot timer reappeared and we picked up the pace, which was cue to emphasize how important grip is when trying to aggressively manipulate the trigger in a compressed timeframe and still achieve "A Zone" hits.

We finished up with a quick debrief in the clubhouse to warm back up. All shooters for both halves had great attitudes and were all very willing to learn. Shooters all made progress and looked much better at the end of the day. Despite some very miserable cold right around noon, NO ONE quit or bitched.

We all enjoyed putting these Clinics on and plan on taking them further down the road. Expect to see us offer these Level 1 and 2 Clinics again in addition to Level 3 and 4.

Thanks again to instructor staff Ashton, Hodge, Dan, and Sam!
