    Polishing a turd

After the 6th attempt at coating, I called it quits. 3 ruined plating baths, a tapestry of curses, multiple trips to the Hofbrau in frustration, I'm just going to put it back together.

Here is why I don't like this miserable POS:

From a distance, slightly out of focus, doesn't look too hateful -

    Little closer -

Huh, it's like it has freckles. But not in a good way, like a redheaded girl -

    It has freckles E V E R Y W H E R E -

    Big ones, at that -

And cracks where there should be no cracks -

    How???

And, for clairity, this is what the whole gun looked like after the first attempt at plating.

Sadly, I spent time cleaning up some stuff prior to plating so it would run better for the Marine who got suckered into buying this abomination. Bad on me. Lesson learned.

Down the road from Quantrill's big raid.
What's the issue? Quality of the steel? Or?

Looks like casting pits - the stuff that was common, a couple decades back when investment cast parts were starting to be used. In the early days, folks like Ruger, would inspect those out. A flawed part could be recycled back into the melting pot. Improvements have been made, as the old inspect and rework system began to erode, the cost benefit of casting vs machining from forging or bar stock. Even with the then better casting techniques, there was what was called micro porosity, that confounded attempts at bluing with a finer final polish. This latter, is one reason older cast guns would use the coarser grits of paper for prep, before bluing. Don't believe, this stuff happens with more modern casters - companies that evolved the technique. Don't see it in Ruger of Browning Hi Powers and some of the latter get nicely polished before bluing, today. It is a worry with modern spray and bake finishes that can be used to "fill" and therefore mask such flaws. The cracks on the corners of the frame, I think Bill is showing are a different worry? Any idea how old this frame is?

Had his gat taken from him in a buy bust gone south. Dude got whipped with it then capped. Luckily, he was carrying XTPs and minimal damage was done. Had it been ball........well, you know.
