Because it is better than living in a French government housing project and drawing welfare for life since no one offers jobs to hostile and barely educated young men is my guess.
The powers-that-be in the Europe and the US have insisted that we have a duty to take in a lot of immigrants from the Moslem world without having a clue about how to integrate them into our cultures. The result in country after country are alienated young men who hate their lot in life and who have been also told since they are very young that as Moslems they are superior.
Given the nature of young men everywhere, some of them are attracted to being a jihadi because they think it will give them a place where they can become respected and successful. Plenty of young men in the past became communists or national socialists for somewhat similar reasons.
However, the vast majority of them only want to support a winner. Taking Ramadi will gain IS a lot of new recruits. Losing a bunch of battles will cause recruitment--and hence their supply of suicide bombers--to dry up.
Smashing IS a lot more would help mitigate the threat.
ISIS has slipped into the town of Kobani disguised as Kurdish and allied fighters and set off several car bombs, and went door to door shooting civilians, including women and children, 146 at most recent count.
In other possibly related news, 39 tourists were killed in Tunisia by a man with a Kalshnikov and explosives, a headless body with islamic slogans on it was found in France, and a mosque was bombed in Kuwait, killing 25 and wounding 202.
Dont be surprised if/when these types find their way to our neighborhood. (again)

I've been hearing some really smart, level-headed people say some truly frightening stuff about the current state of the world, ie. the world situation being similar to 1930's Europe, our Republic being on shaky ground, etc.

I’m not sure that their story of being cooks and truck drivers is going to fly with the Kurdish authorities. An army of only rear echelon types doesn’t generally commit genocide. This is the same BS that surrendering SS types told Allied troops in 1945.
