As for tolerances, could I just have them make the important parts slightly oversized and then have it hand-fitted? That's how the do it on the nice 1911's, right?
    Nope. Doesn't work like that.

Why not just find a 3906?

3rd Gen smiths make me happy.

    Especially the 4566 and 1076.

If I were running a PD, I'd be issuing 5906s, 4006s, and 4566s with BarSto barrels and trigger jobs for all.

Those boutique 1911 manufacturers are buying bare forgings from someplace.

    Books. Bikes. Boomsticks.

I can explain it to you. I can’t understand it for you.

Smith and Wesson 539 is the same pistol with a carbon steel frame. LNIB models run $600-700, and you should be able to haggle the price down a little from there.

Well, the model I was wanting to get duplicated is a 3913NL (with the slanted dust cover), which is a compact single-stack 9mm. S&W never made a stainless steel version (it would have been called a 3916). So I guess I'll keep looking.

Yup, they never made the small frame guns in steel. Brother, I think you are out of luck unless you want to spend crazy amounts of money of a project just because.

We ran 3rd gen S&W 9mms for almost 20 years. I like the guns, they work for me, and I would often outshoot folks carrying Glocks and Sigs who spoke of our duty pistols with derision, however, comma, I am glad we gave them up.

Heh, what are your thoughts behind that "comma"?

I love the 3rd gens too. I look at them and think, why not give them the same custom love as the 1911s? I see that other people have been thinking about the same lines, about the Beretta m92 and Browning HP. We've got so much talent and quality in the small manufacturers in this country, it's a shame to see it focused only on one gun.
