I'd be a much more wealthy many if I has $1 for every time I took an inaccurate and unreliable M9 from a soldier, dropped a little lube on it and then shot a perfect quality with it. The real issues and weaknesses of the pistol are infinitesimal to the Army's lack of training of the M9s users and maintainers. I was always beet red with anger when my chain of command decided that recruiting/retention along with EEO and sexual harassment training were as important than quality pistol training.

If truth in labeling were a thing, we'd have to change it from the "Armed Forces" to the "Occasionally Armed When Outside The US And Even Then Only When We're Probably Going To Get Shot At... Forces". Given that, I find it hard to be surprised that no effort goes into ensuring that our main-line troops are combat-effective with the M9.

    You too?

I know two people in my squadron who deployed downrange with 0 rounds of M9 training. "Youll check that box when you get there." You'd better believe their EEO and Law of Armed Conflict trainings were in top order though.

Is this so they don't happen to offend anyone that they may need to kill?

    Great story Trooper.

For that last several years, my carry needs are centered around M&P9's and a Glock 19 every so often.

But I still have a pair of Beretta 92fs' in the safe. I missed the transition from the 1911 when I was in the Marines. We still the 1911's for the enlisted. Old and very worn, showing their age. The Officer pilots were issued a variety of 38 spec revolvers. Go figure...

To me, the Beretta 92fs is a fun gun to shoot. I even like the way it looks. Sometimes it's ok to own and shoot a gun, just because you enjoy it.

But if someone knowingly chose to carry a Beretta 92fs, investing the time and training to be proficient with it, I would never question their selection of pistol.

Never having given the Beretta any real time or attention, I'm finding the collective reaction amongst my shooting friends to be interesting to say the least. First, I don't make my decisions based upon the whims of the collective. I have no patience for dick measuring contests and don't need or seek approval for my choices. However, being a career LEO as well as a lifelong observer of human nature I'm finding their reactions to be a good example of human nature and how it's effected by peer pressure. I'm known as one of the more gun savy individuals at work and play amongst my circle. I often serve as the defacto armorer/smith on things like 1911s, High Powers, revolvers, etc. Consequently, my advise is often sought out and everyone pays attention to what I use. Since acquiring the Beretta, when I mention it the reaction usually ranges from confusion to outward shock that I would buy such a thing. A few of them have experience with it from the service and their response is typically negative, for all of the reasons already outlined here. Most have never owned or even shot one, yet parrot the collective negatives they've read and heard for years. Only one, just one, has stated outwardly that the Beretta is "cool" and one of his personal choices. He's neither military or LE, just a young shooter who likes the Beretta. Now here's the thing I find most interesting: some of them have told me they like the gun, but they do so in hushed tones as if they're afraid someone will hear them. It's almost as if I'd asked them, "Don't you dig those Twilight movies?"

Do they carry a Beretta in the Twilight movies?

    Trooper224,

Dude, take it to a USPSA match and shoot Production with it. Some people will look at you like you have two heads.

I did get one dude at one match that thought it was cool as crap that I was shooting it, but he had at least 20 "Why the Beretta?" questions. We struck up quite a conversation just about that gun, as he'd never shot one but did have a curiosity about them in general. I let him handle it after the match. Dunno if he went and bought one, but I kind of hope he did.
