Texas DPS going to 9mm M&P.

Texas DPS switching service pistols for troopers

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - New Texas troopers will be issued lighter pistols that experts say have less recoil and can carry more ammunition.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Tom Vinger said Smith & Wesson M&P 9 mm handguns will be issued to troopers finishing their training in January. Current troopers will be allowed to carry their .357-caliber SIG Sauer pistols while DPS expands availability of the new handgun.

The Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/1hyGxOO ) reported Sunday that the Smith & Wesson handgun can carry 17 rounds, plus one in the chamber. The SIG Sauer carries up to 15 rounds. The Smith & Wesson weighs 24 ounces, compared to 34 ounces for the SIG Sauer.

Sgt. Gary Chandler, who's president of the Department of Public Safety Officers Association, says the Smith & Wesson is a great gun.

Perhaps that's why theyr're touting the increased magazine capacity...

Any word on what ammo they plan to use?

And has Smith ever announced changing the 18.75 rifling twist on the 9mm barrels?

Yes, they switched to a faster twist rate earlier in the year. I'm pretty sure it's 1:10 twist now. By most accounts, the accuracy issues have been resolved.

They did on my sample. Its a late 2012 M&P FS 9mm. More accurate than my Glock's 17 & 19 and P30. The trigger is sweet as well. Very smooth, with a short pronounced reset. I love it.

I hope that holds true. I would like one of the 5" models.
