"Ad Astra"
HOLEY SMOKE! what a complete steaming pile of Kark! So glad I checked it out from the library and didn't spend any money on it.
Plenty of talent, including 4 A-listers. Out of this world special effects and sets. (Pun acknowledged.) Occasional breath taking cinematography. But the cinematography is part of the problem. One long, slow-motion, drawn out, pregnant scene where nothing actually happens. They do bust their rumps on "mood."
There is absolutely no coherent story line. Zero understanding of science or physics. And utter contempt for driven people who try to accomplish great things. In fact, the whole point of the movie is that such people are at best delusional and dangerous and at worst outright evil. One can only guess at the amount of cannabis required to write this script. Actually it only took a lot of time watching a bunch of good movies to steal scenes.
Basically we have a boy with daddy issues. It's not a story about the journey, though the writer may have thought it was. We get a bunch of short stories crammed together as though it's a single work. Every idiotic space trope is exquisitely executed with trillion dollar graphics. Moon Pirates, Killer Space Monkeys, Sneaking aboard a rocket 1/2 second before it launches. I recognized scenes from Indiana Jones, Red Dwarf, Star Wars, Star Trek, and likely many more I didn't catch.
Make no mistake, the moron who wrote this has no love of science, ambition, or accomplishment. Heroes are really evil people protected by evil government agencies. What "smart" people do is get high and wait for the inevitable, and justified, end of the human species.
