4Runner for sure. Rav 4s are pretty small. If You didn't want to commit to the 4runner get a subaru.

I loved almost everything about the FJ except:
1. Mechanical defect in the front drivetrain that Toyota couldn't figure out. This made it sound like a 1971 box truck during deceleration.
2. Poor 360 visibility in city traffic. The design of the rear windows led to more blind spots than other vehicles.
It was the most capable off road/snow vehicle I've ever owned. It even beat my 1980's Isuzu Trooper with the all torque 4cyl engine.
As someone who is also starting to kick tires, the 4Runner has identity so many manufactures have all chased each others tails, not so for the 4R, currently in a 2012 Highlander limited 110K trouble free miles, I kinda like the Sequoia but a big factor when the time arrives is "free $$$$". The 2018 Rav looks sweet not sure if its a particular trim level but starting to see them on the road very sharp, Toyota must be loosing to much of the market, this may help regain some of it.
Recently bought the wife a 2016 RAV4. So far it's been rock solid. I would have preferred a 4Runner, but a lot of the things I like about it just aren't necessary for our lifestyle. So, since I don't view vehicles as penis extensions I found the extra expense unnecessary.
After reading all the responses (thanks to all for posting them) we are going shopping in the very near future.
First time I've heard someone refer to the 4R and its capabilities as penis extensions. Around here, (in the mountains), there's a good reason why you see a lot of 4Runners and Subarus on the road. Reliable 4WD or AWD are important on gravel, mud and snow. Never crossed my mind what posers we must all be.
I think one can decide whether one needs the particular qualities of a vehicle without having to use such an argument for justification. Well, that is unless you ride a Harley. That's a bit more complicated. ;)
My next car will likely be a RAV4.
I love cars, but my practical side always gets the better of me. I hate paying for gas unnecessarily, but Living on a mountain, I now need AWD capability. The ability to do light off-roading when needed is and added bonus as our range road is a bit of a goat path and snows over frequently in the winter.
Personally, I like the 1st and 2nd generation iterations of the RAV4, but finding a decent mileage, good condition, example is hard to do these days.
Just a side note BF Goodrich makes KO2s in they stock RAV4 size.
