I love vintage ads.
A higher-res copy of that, as well as other vintage Thompson ads, can be found here:

(Note: This device is NOT legal for possession by anyone living in, around, or near NY. Or within earshot of Bloomberg and his anti-Big Gulp cronies, so keep your televisions and radios turned "off")
So firing from the hip was really a thing?
Yup. It lacked the shoulder thingy that goes up, so it's not so bad.
Yep. Here's Stoner himself doing it in a promotional video for the AR-10

A lot of people on our side make fun of the antis for the hip-fire talking point.
It's not that they made it up... it's just that they're a half-century behind in technique.
Hip-shooting full auto long guns goes 'way back. The Browning Automatic Rifle as originally issued had no bipod: the original doctrine for use of the BAR in WWI called for "walking fire", bursts as the BAR-man advanced across No Mans Land. IIRC, the BAR gunner's ammo belt had a socket that he was supposed to place the butt into.
Hip shooting is for kittens.
